"Hell, No"--He's Not Exonerated
Why on earth would we continue to freely give this organization our blood and treasure without a full, open and continuous acounting of all financial transactions as well as an understanding that its troops and agency officials will treat their charges with basic human respect and dignity. They are accountable to NO ONE! More and more it takes on the posture of the supreme world government all the while plundering the people they are sent to aid. It is either time for a massive overhaul and a conversion to an open entity or it is time to withdraw our support.

This is another story that always surprises me too. Given that we have had a national phobia about energy development, why should it surprise anyone that the price for a resource that is presented as becoming scarce would increase? What would drive the price of crude down would be President Bush's announcement that we are beginning a "Manhattan Project" for energy independence in the US with the goal of being self sufficient within the next 25 years. A goal both doabe and worthy.

Why is it that in a nation founded on Christian beliefs, and where over 80% of the people are Christian, the fact that the majority of the population oppose gay marriage in "news worthy"?? Yet, time after time this same story is written from a "I can't believe this, but it seems to be true" view point. You would think the liberals would get it eventually.
This issue was one of the major reason for Bush's re-election, particularity in light of the arrogant finding of the Massechuets Supreme Court and their demand for the state legislators to pass laws supporting gay marriage. Both the libs and the judiciary understimate the resistance to gay marriage in this country to their peril.

The true purpose of McCain-Fiengold was, IMNSHO, to insure incumbants had the upper-hand during the election cycle. If the ability to raise funds by the competitor were limited, the incumbent naturally had the advantage.
After the obvious power of blogs was displayed during the 2004 election, it had become apparent that blogs will have to be limited if incumbents are to maintain their advantage. Bloggers are keeping a watchful eye on the FEC developments, as should all citizens who are interested it free speech.

Immigration built this country - legal immigration. The process of adding any kind of legitimacy to people violating our borders and our laws sends the wrong message to the world and endangers our security.
A huge burden is being placed on the residents of Mexican border states. The results range from increased crime to the closing of hospitals due to lost revenue treating illegal immigrants.
Michelle Malkin is probably the formost blogger on immigration issues. She has fired up a blog dedicated to the issue of immigration: The Immigration Blog. It is well worth your time to visit and educate yourself on this pressing issue.
I am certainly in favor of brining in new people to our country through immigration. But, I expect them to melt into the pot, not create their own pot, I expect them to come legaly and obey our laws and I expect loyalty to their country of CHOICE rather than their country of birth.

Long ago and far away, I once maintained a security clearance, Top Secret at that. The list of "dos and don'ts" is long, very clear and drummed into the brains of each clearance holder. Sandy Berger knew, without any doubt, that as he stuffed classified material down his undies and in his socks he was committing a felony that would earn him a sizable fine and jail time. Trust me, had I taken documents home, I would still be living off "government assistance".
His punishment - $10,000 fine and 3 year suspension of his clearance. This sends so many wrong messages, I wouldn't even know where to start. It is obvious that the security of our country still takes a back seat to politics.

I have deliberately avoided blogging about Ms. Schiavo simply because it is such an expansive and complicated case, I do not feel I am qualified in any real way to comment, except to express my opinion.
To that end, I have always believed that it would be appropriate to remove the feeding tube if it were indeed true that Terri simply was not longer "home" and had no chance to regain any level of consiousness. This article seems to put the argument to rest for me. Terri died in 1990 - her organs were simply sustained by the most basic levels of brain function.
May all involved find peace.

What is stunning to be about the EU dropping the ban on arms sales to China is that it either shows an incredible lack of respect for the threat China poses to the stability of the Far East, or it shows their total willingness to play a very dangerous game of "let's balance the 'US Threat' by making China an even more powerful military threat".
This approach uses the same logic they have been using with the Islamists in Europe, much to their peril. China has done nothing to earn a dropping of the weapons ban. And European ignorance and arrogance is making the whole world a more dangerous place to live!

Damn - I'm READY FOR SPRING!!!!!

I am really ready for warm weather camping!! Nice weekend with the Scouts. Night got pretty chilly though ( 15 degrees last night ). This is the first campout for our new scouts, those just moving up from WEBELOS. So, we go to a local cabin donated to our county by a judge. It gives us the option of the young guys sleeping indoors - which they usually do, along with most our "seasoned" scouts. However, it is unheated this time of year, so still well below freezing last night!
A campout always helps center me. Something about 36 hours out-of-doors that really recharges the old batteries! The guys took a 4.2 mile hike, worked on firebuilding (new scouts mainly - did it with one match), skills with the saw and ax, and, of course, their main focus - FOOD!!! Pretty good selection: hotdogs and mac and cheese, hamburgers, stew, apple pie, chocolate cake, breakfast barritos, pancakes, bacon and the usual snacks!! A good time had by all! Here are a couple of photos:

Breakfast for the adults this morning - pancakes and bacon. Greg did a fine job - I stopped at 7!! We have long since learned not to let the kids cook for us!!

Every month we venture into the boonies for a camping adventure. Rain, shine, snow, sleet, hail - kinda like postal delivery people! This month is no exception. This is the month we take our new scouts, usually in 6th grade, on their first camp out. It is quite a process to see them go through this first outing. Everything from no gear, to big bird sleeping bags to the new gadget that the scout's dad knows his son can't live without!
This is the month we teach the newbies fire saftey, the safe handling of saws, axes and knives, how to light a camp stove, build a fire - a truly busy and fun weekend.
So, blogging will be non-existant. I will post a few photos upon my return Sunday night to give you a flavor of the weekend.

Had our soldiers really been as incompetent as Giuliana reports, her car would have been filled with holes instead of the 2 or 3 holes found. And, if they had meant to kill her, she would be dead. A belt from a SAW or a couple 40mm rounds would have taken care of it.
This woman purposely placed herself in jepordy thinking since she was anti-American she was safe, she played on the emotions of her country to be ransomed and then she got a security agent killed. For what??? What an ignorant, arrogant bitch.

Three things come to mind while reading this story.
1: Unless the female guard escorting this dirtball was 6'2" and 200 pounds, what the hell was she doing in such a position?
2: Given this was his third go around, why wasn't he in cuffs and shackels?? Is this a natural result of the promotion of a criminal's rights? Are more judges going to have to die before a criminal going up for his third trial is treated like . . . well . . . a criminal?
3: With the advent of 3 strikes and you are out laws, are criminals, going down for the 3rd count, more likely to give escapes like this a try if there is not a death penalty looming over their heads. This guy was facing life, why not kill a few people and try to escape trial and prison? This guy certainly deserves to be shot, hung, injected - what ever - to send him on his way to hell without taking a dime of taxpayer money.

It seems that the UK will have to undergo its own 9/11 before the fully realize the lethal threat they are under. I have read about the internal debate the parliament has been having about the "rights" of these folks and the danger presented to the people of the UK by holding them - all the while ignoring the warning of their own security agency saying releasing these animals will endanger the country. Truly an instance of politics creating insanity.

It is difficult to find all the words to describe my Haiti trip. So, I won't try. Here is my journal. It is rather long, but one topic that came up again and again during our stay at Baddin-Meado was that the people there did not want to be forgotten. So, in their honor, here is the whole thing. All 8 days, all activities, all thoughts. It was quite an experience. And, the beginning of an enormous project that will easily take years to complete. Enjoy the read.

This story has popped up all over the net over the past few days. I have listed it twice in my Daily Dozen. The thing I find most disquieting about this is that there is, in reality, no solution to this problem. Germany, and much of Europe, have held open the door to people who have no intention of becoming German, they simply wanted to leave the oppression of their homeland. Their customs and beliefs are not being shed infavor of more liberal and democratic western ideals, they are in fact hardening their old world stance.
Europe is very very close to a tipping point where they will be unable to reverse the Islamofication of their society. I am not sure they have the will to stop this process. Time will tell, but time is very short I fear.

Off to Haiti
Off to Haiti
Well, tomorrow is the day our little band heads off to Haiti. I am looking forward to the adventure, but mainly to having some impact that allows the people we will work with to get a handle on life.
All the things that pop into my head to say sound a bit trite. Having never been there, I have no real expectations. The group I am traveling with are part of a larger group that make many trips a year. All tell the same tails of poor living conditions, no clean water, poor sanitation, no communication or infrastructure - - - the list is long and disheartening. When the opportunity came up for me to go, I really could not say no. How can a person take a pass on helping these folks?? And, since I have a broad range of technical experience – radio communication, solar power, wilderness survival – I felt I would not just be taking up a seat, but actually contributing is a real way.
I received a parish blessing at Mass this morning. I am humbled that the parish is praying for our group, embarrassed at the attention and pleased with myself that I stepped up and am going. It is an odd mix, but there it is.
I have completed packing, feels like an extended wilderness Scout trip. I took no shelter equipment, doubled the size of my first aid kit, took 2 water filtration systems, water purification tablets/liquid, good boots and 3 sets of all clothes.
I took communications gear, 2 GPS systems since I will be required to plot out villages, 2 compasses and accurate maps.
And, a minimal stash of food: 5 day packs each containing: 2 oatmeal, 4 granola bars and 4 meat sticks. Worst comes to worst, that should hold me over.
And personal gear: MP3 player with radio, camera with CF cards for 800 photos and a crap load of batteries.
I have set aside all the stories I have been reading in their news of rebel forces in the region we seem to be going into. I am not sure we would present the kind of target they would be interested in. Over all, the reports from others traveling there is that things are fairly quiet and as long as we stay out of “troubled areas” we will be fine. I trust we will. And, I am hoping that since this is a church trip, we may have some extra protection. I have never been one to expect God to protect me. But I have always thought that if I live my life well, do what is right and thank God for allowing me to make a difference where I can, that my life will unfold as He wants it to. On the day I stand before Him, I simply want to say I did the best I could and to thank Him for His love. That day will arrive whether I am in Haiti or walking across a street.
I appreciate any and all prayers for our little group. I will post a full trip report when I return, probably over the last weekend of this month. Until then.
Well, tomorrow is the day our little band heads off to Haiti. I am looking forward to the adventure, but mainly to having some impact that allows the people we will work with to get a handle on life.
All the things that pop into my head to say sound a bit trite. Having never been there, I have no real expectations. The group I am traveling with are part of a larger group that make many trips a year. All tell the same tails of poor living conditions, no clean water, poor sanitation, no communication or infrastructure - - - the list is long and disheartening. When the opportunity came up for me to go, I really could not say no. How can a person take a pass on helping these folks?? And, since I have a broad range of technical experience – radio communication, solar power, wilderness survival – I felt I would not just be taking up a seat, but actually contributing is a real way.
I received a parish blessing at Mass this morning. I am humbled that the parish is praying for our group, embarrassed at the attention and pleased with myself that I stepped up and am going. It is an odd mix, but there it is.
I have completed packing, feels like an extended wilderness Scout trip. I took no shelter equipment, doubled the size of my first aid kit, took 2 water filtration systems, water purification tablets/liquid, good boots and 3 sets of all clothes.
I took communications gear, 2 GPS systems since I will be required to plot out villages, 2 compasses and accurate maps.
And, a minimal stash of food: 5 day packs each containing: 2 oatmeal, 4 granola bars and 4 meat sticks. Worst comes to worst, that should hold me over.
And personal gear: MP3 player with radio, camera with CF cards for 800 photos and a crap load of batteries.
I have set aside all the stories I have been reading in their news of rebel forces in the region we seem to be going into. The Bud Ad - What a great tribute!
I loved the simplicity of the Bud ad thanking the troops. Honestly, it nearly had me in tears. While it seems like such a simple thing, the act of thanking a service man or woman for their willingness to serve means so much to them. A short story about my return to "the world".
I left home on April 21, 1969 and returned April 23, 1971, to the girl of my dreams and my wife of 32 years. I spent a year at remote sites in Taiwan and a year in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. All the while, my girl stayed true and sucked it up through all the campus crap of the day.
I left the US in the era of black suits, white shirts, white socks and black shoes. I returned to checkered pants, colored shirts, stripped coats and platform shoes! Talk about a culture shock.
I did not experience the worst of the demonstrators upon my return to Sea-Tac, we disembarked well away from the terminal and were pretty much separated from the general crowd until we were well within the terminal complex. I flew to Chicago and then a short hop to Bishop airport in Flint Michigan, to the arms of my girl and the love of my family.
During the short flight, I chatted with the stewardess and a nice lady sitting next to me. She could not wrap her head around the fact that it had been two years since I had been home. She knew I was coming home from Vietnam and was meeting my family in Flint. Somehow, word filtered forward since I was the one military guy getting off. As I got off, the majority of folks sitting welcomed me home and said how happy they were I got home safe. A few moments of my life I will always remember.
Soldiers give so much, risk so much and love our country so much, they deserve our thanks and, as I know first hand, appreciate it down to their souls.

Here is the deal, the MSM wants the troops to take a hit. They want to embarrass the soldiers, it has nothing to do with the event. I wonder why it is that Clinton could get a B.J. while chatting with Arafat and we are told it's only sex - why bother. Now, soldiers, in a combat zone, letting off steam is a scandal. And, make no mistake, heads will roll here - but what crap. Let the soldiers live their life and do their job.

I wonder what it will take for the West to awaken and realize they are in a fight for their survival with Islam. No, I am no religious bigot. But, those faithful to the "more radical" forms of Islam are perfectly willing to cross the lines of civilalized behavior and attack any unbelievers. Those especially at risk are converts to Christianity from Islam, with death the punishment in most Middle Eastern countries. This behavior is becoming established in the West, and quickly.

A weekend in the snow - Winter Event 2005
Those of you who know me and have read my blog for awhile realize one of my personal commitments is to the Scouting program. (For a comprehensive view of our troop, look at Troop47.com). There is something very satisfying about seeing a young boy grow from a little boy learning about living in the wilderness to a young man comfortable, no matter what the environment. Perhaps the hardest thing to teach is the skill of being warm and contented while living outside in the winter.
Each year we participate in a Winter Event. After a day of games, we adjourn to our campsite, cook, sit around the fire, and enjoy the scouts. I declare this year a resounding success! We won 4 ribbons, had some GREAT food (blueberry pancakes, deep fried catfish, shepherds pie) and good weather. And, the boys stayed warm, brought dry clothes for after their "play" time, slept great and were home early afternoon on Sunday. For those who have not enjoyed sleeping outside in the winter - try it! It is peaceful and enjoyable, just dress warm!

Perspective on Biden's questioning of Dr. Rice
I listened to bits and pieces of Dr. Rice's testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations committee this past week. She is a very powerful woman, and will make a great Secretary of State (I do wish she would get rid of the crackly voice when under tension though). But, I was interested in three primary streams of questioning.
First - the "what mistakes did you make in Iraq to date", second, the "where the hell are the WMDs and had we known they weren't there, we never would have voted to go" line, and third the "just where do you stand on the torture issue". It seemed to me that all questioning by the "loyal opposition" descended to a level of political hackery that ultimately just pissed me off. So, I did a little research.
Joe Biden holds himself up as a "moderate" interested in what is best for the country. But, it seems that his feelings about Iraq have more to do with who is President than what will provide the most security for the US. I started my research with a simple google search: "senator biden transcript 1998 Iraq". Try it. It would seem that Senator Biden had much different feelings towards Iraq during the Clinton administration than during the Bush administration. For example, the transcript of Scott Ritter's Septermber 3, 1998 Senate testimony is quite eye opening. Search for Senator Biden's comments and see if you see a slight difference between the line of questioning during Dr. Rice's testimony and the September 1998 Scott Ritter testimony.
Senator Boxer then took up the mantra that the only reason we went to Iraq was because of the threat of nuclear weapons. Perhaps if she had read the October 2002 resolution that she had voted on, she would have not looked quite the fool.
And, finally, the torture. If I hear puppy piles of naked prisoners, pink panties on their heads, or dog leashes around their necks called torture one more time, Iwill vomit! Biden's question of Dr. Rice asking how she would feel if US prisoners were "water boarded" should have been answered like this: "Senator Biden, I would THANK GOD that the only thing done to them was that they were subjected to water boarding. They would still have their heads. Their bodies would not have been burned to a crisp. They would not have been dismembered or have their intestines spread all over the street. Yes, I would give thanks." Perhaps he could ask the Iraqi National Guard how they feel about torture. Oh, no, wait. You can't talk to them if their head in on their lap.
It is obvious that many in the Democratic party have put their hatred of Bush and the conservatives of the country ahead of our nation's security. You wonder how many will have to die before they realize we, the human race, are in a war for the survival of humanity.

Saying Goodbye to a Friend
Saying goodbye to a friend.
A friend of mine died this past weekend. In hindsight, I would have liked to be closer to Stan. But, I am grateful for the time we did spend together and the friendship we had.
I met him through Scouting. His son, John, was the Den Chief for a den I shared with Glenn, another scouting friend. Stan was not a parent to point his kids at something and then leave them unsupported, he participated with them. He came to the meetings as we entered Boy Scouts, he went on many of the trips and ran the awards table for one of the coldest winter events I have experienced. He could always be found on the sidelines, cheering on his kids. There was no doubt he was in their corner, pushing them, cheering them and loving them.
Professionally, he was a local State Farm agent, ours, in fact. He ran his business with an interesting mix of efficiency and warmth. He always had time for me when I needed to discuss auto insurance, but the conversation always turned to kids, Scouts and the latest update on how those Scouts working on the Personal Management merit badge were doing. He gave of himself freely and with love – what more can you ask of any man.
Stan will be profoundly missed by his family, 51 is way to young to leave them. And, all of us who shared parts of our life with him are better for the experience and left empty by his departure.
He was loved and will be missed.

All atwitter about nothing new!
The blogsphere, conservative pundits and even a couple of the nightly news programs are all atwitter about the CBS news investigation of - - - CBS news. Guess what, they made mistakes, could not verify the documents and MAY have even coordinated with the DNC prior to the 60 Minutes show. Oh, and Dan the man was a simple dupe in this, but he is accountable for his mistakes. I find I simply have no desire to even read the report. The content that is being repeated and repeated and repeated has been known since about 12 hours after the program, the documents were FAKE!!! Period. END OF STORY! PERIOD!!! Nothing else matters because the entire premise of the story - Bush shirking his military duty - is simply NOT A STORY because THE DOCUMENTS WERE FAKE!!!!!!!
CBS lost all semblance of credibility long, long ago. I see little they can do to regain the trust of the viewing public. Well, of the aware viewing public anyway.
So, I suggest everyone give it a rest. The documents were FAKE, CBS LIED and Bush WON. The story is ended!

The CBS News Internal Review of the Bush National Guards documents is out.
Well, well, a few heads roll anyway. CBS released their much anticipated internal review of their complete crash-and-burn regarding forged documents about Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard. Honestly, it did little to convince me that they have recognized how far off the objective journalistic trail they have strayed. Time will tell if there is any willingness to once again become a news organization.

Do we really want to be associated with an organization like the UN?
The continual degeneration of the UN over the past decade as finally reduced it to an organization I do not believe we should be associated with. Sure, if we want to sit in on it's deliberation, fine. But, to give it credence as a viable world body is foolishness.
In recent history (the past year) there are 3 instances I will point you to for your review. The most recent was part of today's daily dozen. It involves the explotiation of young girls in the Congo by UN troops. Why the hell would we support an organization that allows this? And, a quick reading of the article implies that this is a known and ongoing problem that the UN seems unable or unwilling to correct.
Second, the Oil for Food scandal. A quick Google search of the topic reveals thousands of sources for your reading pleasure. The bottom line is that at a minimum it appears that over 23 Billion dollars were stolen from the Iraqi people and distributed to companies dealing with the UN in the Oil for Food program. I strongly suggest that the first act of the new Iraqi government be to sue the UN to get this money returned to them.
And, finally, how does the UN impact the US soldier? During my 21 years of military service, both regular and National Guard, my oath was to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, not the UN. Yet, when Michael New refused to wear the blue beret of the UN, we was Court Martialed.
Folks, we need to get a serious handle on what our relationship with the UN should be. I, for one, think their world headquarters would look much better on some street of Paris and our annual dues would be much better spent on the war on terror.

It Snowed!!
We have finally had some snow!! It's been years! While it is a pain in the butt, it also makes it seem like we had a winter! A view to the south of our front yard kinda tells it all!

Imagine, a former employee of Hillary has been indicted! Why doesn't it ever strike the MSM as odd that she began her career as part of the prosecution team for Nixon's impeachment yet when you review her legal history since her marriage to Bill Clinton, so many of their business associates have been convicted or found dead? Yes, I know, dig out the tin-foil hat! But, take a moment and think of all the friends you have had over the years. And, friends of your close friends and your family. How many have been murdered? I know of one friend's mother who was murdered about 4 years ago. That's it. Been on this planet nearly 55 years, and that's my single example. How about arrested and jailed? Again, except for maybe 2 people I remotely knew, I come up empty. Yet, if you review the Clinton family's political career, it is filled with corrupt friends/employees now dead or imprisoned. Kinda makes you wanto to say "Hummmmmm!"
